This time I was not alone, I was with the man from Channel 4 who was interested in filming both me and the bridge to nowhere for a short film - he is seen lurking and working in several of the photos. These photos cover all aspects of the unfinished junction including the 'bridge-to-nowhere' and the last mile north of the M25. Enter when ready..... Nothing but a bit of Didling and Cocking - not a semi-legitimate activity, but a signpost on very minor road in Sussex Graham (mistral) standing by the car used for the roadtrip. The former end of the A272 at the A30 in Stockbridge. The route was altered when the M3 opened and a decision was taken to move all A-roads out of Winchester. The A30 disappears through the town into the distance. Another view of the former A272 teminal in Stockbridge A closer-in view of the semi-double roundabout in Stockbridge where the A30/A3057. & B3049 (ex-A272) meet The current terminal point of the A272 at an anonymous crossroads precisely in the middle of nowhere. There it is again, the current A272 terminal on the A30, about 5 miles away from Stockbridge The only other interesting thing at the A272/A30/B3420 crossroads - the car is worth a look too! The SABRE roadtrip transport with all the other participating Sabristi inside. On the former A30 between Sutton Scotney and Micheldever, is reminder of the past. This sign would have been vitally important for travellers travelling from the South West, a promise of refreshments and toilets ahead on the then new M3. Remember that the M3 ended at Popham (J8) in those days Quite possibly the only advance warning sign for a service area on an unclassified road. This sign dates back to when this road was the A30 heading towards the J8 terminus of the shiny-new M3 and the shiny-new Fleet Services.

This completes the full upgrade to the A249 between the M2 and Sheerness. It replaces the 1959 Kingsferry Bridge, which was a bottleneck on and off the Isle of Sheppey, and freqently lifted to allow shipping to pass underneath. The old bridge is now relegated to unclassified status but remains open as an alternative to the new bridge, a local route, and also for the railway which crosses the Swale at that point. Also have look at the collection taken in February 2005 - "A249 Sheppey Way & Kingsferry Bridge". This shows the bridge and approaches in early stages of construction. From the M2 we take the A249 towards Sheerness and pass under the M2 which is on the Stockbury viaduct We are now approaching the first exit which is for the A2 Getting close to the A2 exit Dipping down into the cutting to pass under the A2 Passing underneath the A2 roundabout Immediately past the A2 we arrive at the Bobbing (& Services) exit Next up is the B2005 exit Closer to the B2005 exit, the signage is somewhat different Never seen this sign before! The A249 DC used to end here - now we have an option to carry straight on The new Sheppey Crossing has Almost at the last exit before the new bridge; we see it rising in the background Last chance to exit to use the old bridge, Ridham Docks, or get to the nearest villages On the new bridge heading onto the Isle of Sheppey Nearly at the crest of the bridge now. At the crest we will be 29m above ground level. Starting to head back to earth, we see the new DC stretching across the marshes Approaching the new Cowstead Corner roundabout with the B2231 - towards Eastchurch & Leysdown Left lane for the A249; right lane for the B2231 Almost at the new Cowstead Corner roundabout Beyond Cowstead Corner, the A249 remains Dual Carraigeway and is now lit. Between Cowstead Corner and the Queenborough junction Ahead for the A249 to Sheerness Docks and right for the A250 to Sheerness & Minster Approaching Queenborough junction which is a double traffic light controlled junction The right turn for the A250 to Sheerness & Minster Approaching the second traffic light junction, the B2007 to Queenborough. Low level streetlights because of overhead power lines Now heading back towards the M2 and Maidstone, we are approaching the double traffic light junction from the other direction The traffic light junction and low-level street lighting, Queenborough Junction Left turn to make a right turn toward B2007 Queenborough The roundabout to nowhere midway between the A250 junction and the B2231 roundabout But the happy ones are OK? Approaching Cowstead Roundabout Now heading down the new A249 towards the new bridge and the mainland. 9 miles of grade-seperated bliss until the roundabout with the M2. The old road is on the left of us as the two routes run parallel towards the Swale Still running parallel with the old A249. The bridge looms ahead of us Going up onto the bridge approaching the mainland. At the crest of the bridge, 29m above ground level The bridge heads back down to ground level and the DC stretches away across the flat landscape towards Sittingbourne and the M2 Traffic from the old bridge can merge here. This used to be the starting point of the DC (Iwade Bypass) to the M2 The bridge seen from the ground. The M2 Medway Bridge has a cycle/footpath across it next to the coastbound carraigeway on the 1963 bridge. Today I walked the Medway Bridge and photographed it from all angles. If you wish to do the same (the general views are superb) then it is best to park on the unclassified road on the Borstal side. The Medway Bridge opened in 1963 and carried the D2M M2 (plus a footpath) across the River Medway. The original bridge has recently gained two 'friends'. Firstly (but not by much) came the high-speed railway (Channel Tunnel Rail Link) bridge in 2002, and following very shortly afterwards came the second M2 bridge in 2004 with the widening of the M2 between J1 & J4. The original bridge carries the D4 coastbound carriageway, plus a cycle and footpath. The new M2 bridge carries the londonbound carraigeway. Wouldham Road in Borstal, Kent. A very unassuming motorway bridge passes over the road. This is where we park the car and begin the exploration. Just by the overbridge is a cycle/footpath leading in the direction of the River Medway Although approaching the river valley we are gradually climbing; a bit like a slip road, in fact! The trees on the left give way to fence with the sounds of heavy traffic behind it Just as the fence ends. We look down to the right and see the valley sides falling away and a huge bridge stretching across the valley ahead of us Looking to the left. Hang on, there's a motorway there. 4 lanes of traffic speed past on their way coastbound. Definately a motorway on the other side of the fence. D4M to be precise The valley sides fall away from the bridge revealing spectacular views towards Rochester The divided cycle/footpath stretches across to the other side of the valley. The cycle path is a national route, and the footpath forms part of the North Downs Way (long distance footpath). Beside the path behind a small fence and wind barrier is the coastbound M2 The coast-side expansion joint The M2 revealed from the path beside it running across the Medway Bridge Pausing for breath, we admire the view of the River Medway And still the path continues straight ahead Halfway across the bridge, and the view is of the River Medway The London-side expansion joint As we continue to cross the bridge, we look down onto the Medway Leisure Park The M2 is still with us - as we would expect it to be We now cross over the Medway Valley railway line The Diggerland Nearly over the bridge, but still a bit more before we get back on solid land The cycle lane splits and forms a GSJ with the A228 (on the overbridge) The M2 crosses in the front of this view of the Medway Valley towards Maidstone From the A228 overbridge, the coastbound carriageway on the 1963 bridge The coastbound carriageway on the 1963 bridge. The new A228 off-slip is in the foreground. The trio of bridges completes with the new high speed railway line. A speed record of 208mph was set here during trials and tests of the new line. The line of the former londonbound A228 off-slip deceleration lane can clearly be seen. Remember this bridge used to carry both D2 carraigeways before the widening programme. The M2 stretching away towards the Nashenden Valley and J3 at the top of Bluebell Hill. Framed by a streetlamp. a further view of the 1963 bridge. Imagine, if you can. that this bridge used to carry a D2 motorway and a footpath before the widening took place Heading back to the path across the bridge from the A228, it can be noticed that the cyclepath follows the line of the former coastbound on and off slips for the A228. The gap in the trees with a distinctive curve of the treeline makes this obvious. More views of the former layout of the coastbound sliproads. The curve of the trees and the gap that they leave makes it easy to see the 60's layout Viewing the former coastbound sliproads back towards the A228 which is around the corner to the left. I estimate that the kerbstones on the right remain from its sliproad days. The on-slip now converted to a cycle path Walking back across the bridge, we notice evidence in the fenceline of the former acceleration lane before the junction with the A228 was remodelled during widening works. (Still) walking back across the bridge - its a long bridge you know!! The 1963 bridge enabled the M2 to take the traffic away from the A2 through the Medway Towns. This is a view from traffic of the old & new Rochester Bridges taking the A2 across the Medway. On the old Rochester Bridge - currently undergoing extensive refurbishment. The A2 crosses the Medway. The bypass was built in matter of weeks and stretched from the A25 at Nutfield to the A23 at Salfords and was only ever used for military purposes. After WW2 the road was abandoned and only the improved section of an existing lane was left for use by the public; the new build section being left to decay unused. Near Nutfield we found the evidence.... 29/12/2005 - I now have received (and published in this album with permission) seven photos from the other member of SABRE (Chris Evans, but not THE Chris Evans) who was the inspiration behind this visit, so the road can be seen from his viewpoint as well. A mile to the A1(M)/M18 Wadworth Interchange Half a mile to the Wadworth Interchange Nearly at the Interchange At the interchange. It would have been a better photo had it not been for that bus & lorry combi!!! Succession of 3 bridges at A1(M) J36 Approaching the northern end of the Doncaster By-Pass - Red House Interchange ...and back to the A1 until Fairburn Can't they do anything about this winding dual carraigeway?? .....they are!! A1 - All shunted over to the former southbound A1 A1(M) - then we swing to righton a temporary link. The temporary link gradually descends onto the formation of the new A1(M). Construction works can be seen on the extreme left. The new A63 exit from the A1(M) 1 mile distant At half a mile to the A63, the sign already has a corner missing As does the sign at the junction Another sign gantry across the mainline and exit slip. Other motorways simply have a a number sign at the exit A1(M): New warning gantry Heading back towards the A1 alignment at Micklefield througha deep cutting Almost back on original alignment of the A1 More new warning gantries on the final curve before the A1(M)/M1 junction Rejoining the existing A1(M) alignment at Micklefield. The lighting for the A1(M) and M1 junction starts in the background The double-width hardshoulder on the A1(M) at Hook Moor Half-mile warning for the A64 exit The exit warning for the A64. Three lanes for the A1(M) and 1 for the A64. We are on the A64 lanes - now 2 lanes wide The exit for the roundabout (marked A64 Leeds) leaves on the left whilst the A64 to York dives under the A1(M) ...and we reach the end of the motorway and back on the all-purpose A64 to York and Scarborough. It is the end of this photo journey as well.

The road has a 30 mph limit and at least 3 escape lanes. Here is a selection of photos of the elevated section. Original plans took the M23 as far north as Streatham and J7 was laid out in readiness. A bridge was built that would have taken M23 traffic over the northbound A23. 30 years on it only serves to let rabbits cross above all London-bound traffic. I managed to find access to the top of the bridge and took a set of photographs. The other unused M23 bridge at Hooley is private property and contains a works compund for the M25 (1 mile to the south). I gained access up onto the northernmost unused M23 bridge at Hooley and took a few pictures. I thought them worthy of their own collection. They are all of the M25.......... There is picture of a deserted M20 at Junction 3. There is a collection of pictures of the M25 between J8 and J10 taken on the day it opened from the passenger seat of bemused friends Landrover. There is a deserted M25 at J7 with the M23. There is a couple of pictures of the M25 under construction between J3 & J4 taken late in 1985. The roads were so empty then..........
